Discussions regarding hermeneutics, historicism, and the possibility of philosophy between Strauss and Gadamer. The implication of Martin Heidegger's thought for these fundamental themes is taken up in relation to Gadamer's own "Wahrheit und Methode" (Truth and Method). Gadamer later addressed these issues specifically, as a result of this correspondence. Originally published in a continental journal of philosophy, it is today rare and difficult to obtain.

In this paper, Adrienne Johnson looks to connect the philosophies of Charles Taylor and Hans-Georg Gadamer toward lifelong education, specifically as they relate to UNESCO's second and third educational principles of democracy, broadly conceived as the realization of one's own potential and human development, understood as the complete fulfillment of humankind as an individual and as a community member. Johnson's goal in this work is to not only tease out some of the tensions encountered within...

In language which can be understood by ordinary people with college backgrounds, this book introduces philosophical hermeneutics (the interpretive theory of the humanities) to English teachers, with their role in writing instruction especially in mind. The book contrasts philosophical hermeneutics with other theories of interpretation and summarizes the chief ideas of Martin Heidegger, Paul Ricoeur, and Hans-Georg Gadamer. After setting forth the basic propositions of a hermeneutical rhetoric,...

Theory and practice of the Cross-Cultural Arts Exhibit project initiated by the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) is described in this paper. The project was developed based on the concept of post-museum. Instead of transmitting values and knowledge, communication in the post-museum stresses the construction of meaning by active individual agents and celebrates diversity of viewpoints. The dialogical model of teaching diverse visual cultures, which...

This book takes seriously the transformation of art into philosophy, focusing upon the systematic interest that so many European philosophers take in modernism. Among the philosophers Gerald Bruns discusses are Theodor W. Adorno, Maurice Blanchot, Arthur Danto, Stanley Cavell, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, Jacques Derrida, Jean-François Lyotard, Jean-Luc Nancy, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, and Emmanuel Levinas. As Bruns demonstrates, the difficulty of...

¿Refiere a otra cosa? No vamos a intentar plantear una definición de lenguaje, ni una clasificación, ni...

In his book, "Inventions: Writing, Textuality, and Understanding," Gerald L. Bruns interprets the hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer. Hermeneutics is the art of interpretation. One principle of hermeneutics is that understanding always proceeds from an initializing moment of confusion, strangeness, darkness, or concealment. Concealment's opposite is clarity, and, while a repeated direction to composition students is "make it clear," experience is not always clear, nor is...

This paper provides a historical background of hermeneutics, a method of textual analysis that is an "artful" form of understanding and a process of exposing hidden meanings. The paper discusses the evolution of hermeneutics, as well as the philosophical influences of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Noting that a close link between phenomenology and hermeneutics has resulted in the terms often being used interchangeably and universally, the paper points out...

This book explores the phenomenon of the Third Reich from a philosophical perspective. It concentrates on the ways in which the subjects and experiences of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and Anti-Semitism are conceived by eight German thinkers from the Continental tradition. These eight intellectuals include Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Karl Löwith, Carl Schmitt, Ernst Jünger, Jean Améry, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Jan Assmann. Based on careful philosophical examinations of both known and...

Teacher roles in contemporary American schools should be more closely aligned to hermeneutics as the study of meaning (interpretation/understanding). A marriage between Platonic notions of interpretation and the quest for meaning with the interpretive theories of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Wilhelm Dilthey, and Hans-Georg Gadamer is suggested. Schleiermacher argues that understanding cannot focus primarily on parts (words) without considering the effect the parts may have on...

Distinguishing the contextual realm addressed by ontological education as a valid area for inquiry by those who think about language and communication, this paper discusses an approach to education that is ontological in nature, in that its focus is the "being" of human beings rather than their knowledge. The paper explores several ideas drawn from the work of the Landmark Education Corporation, an international organization that offers a curriculum of courses and seminars to the...

This paper explores the question of interpreting complex texts, particularly scripts and multimedia presentations. The paper first reviews the literature on natural discourse, noting that although interpreting spoken natural language seems rather straightforward, many scholars have discussed what is required to make sense of discourse. The paper next discusses the discourse of novels, pointing out that writing and print fix language to a page and, in doing so, change an individual's...

This article examines the relationship between reflecting and making in the context of the new institutional connection between research and art/design. The article argues that while this new dispensation offers exciting possibilities for fruitful cross- and interdisciplinary development, caution is necessary to ensure that the artistic domain retains a level of autonomy within the broader university. For elucidation, the article initially looks to the early history of education in our fields...

The Arctic is a vast, sparsely populated area. The demographic situation points to online distance education as a solution to support lifelong learning and to build competence in the region. An overall aim of all university education is what Hans Georg Gadamer calls "Bildung", what we in Norwegian call "dannelse" and what Richard Rorty has called "edification". A first problem to be addressed here is that in online distance learning some teachers find that is...
